Xcel Energy Requests Special Use Permit For New Cold Spring Substation
COLD SPRING (WJON News) -- The move to build a new electrical substation in Cold Spring could take another step forward Wednesday night. The city council will vote on a special use permit which includes the building of a 10-foot high security fence.
Xcel Energy wants to demolish the existing substation on Highway 23 and build a new one and needs a special use permit in order to proceed. The Planning Commission approved the special use permit at their meeting on March 19th with seven conditions which includes the security fence.

The council could add additional conditions to the project prior to approval. In January the council amended the ordinance to allow a substation in the C-3 district with a special use permit which is why Xcel Energy is now applying for it.
