COLLEGEVILLE - The post office at St. John's University has a new name. President Barack Obama has signed into law a bill that designates the Collegeville Post Office in Guild Hall as the "Eugene J. McCarthy Post Office".

The bill passed the House in May, and the Senate in July.

McCarthy was born in Watkins in 1916, where his father was a postmaster.

McCarthy graduated from Saint John's Preparatory School in 1932, and from St. John's University in 1935.

He was a U.S. Representative from 1949 to 1959, and served in the U.S. Senate from 1959 to 1971.
