The CDC says that this product was sold in twenty-nine states, including Minnesota and Washington D.C. at Trader Joe’s stores.
The basil could have come in a clamshell shaped container if that helps in determining whether you have this product or not. Trader Joe’s stores has pulled the product from its store shelves and is working with the FDA who are investigating.
Twelve people are said to have been made sick from this Basil, including patients here in Minnesota. Patients in six other states have needed medical care as well, with one being hospitalized.
If you discover that you have some of the recalled basil, you can either return it to Trader Joes or throw the product away.
Once you’ve gotten rid of the basil, medical experts state that you need to wash your surfaces with hot, soapy water. These surfaces include your countertops where other foods could come in contact.
Symptoms of Salmonella that you need to be on the look at for include:
- Diarrhea with a fever of 102 degrees or higher
- Diarrhea that lasts three days or more without improvement
- Bloody Diarrhea
- Vomiting that hinders you from keeping fluids down
Dehydration signs that could be present if you’ve had this basil include:
- Dry mouth or throat
- Not peeing much
- Feeling Dizzy when you stand up
Symptoms could start as soon as six hours or six days after being exposed and most people recover between four and seven days from first being sick.
Young children under 5, adults over 65, and those with compromised immune systems could have a more sever affect from this illness and it could require hospitalization.
If you feel you have these symptoms, contact your doctor with any questions or seek care from an Emergency Room.
