RED WING, Minn. (AP) - Authorities say a hiker from Iowa has fallen to his death from a bluff trail in southern Minnesota.

Employees at a wastewater treatment plant located at the base of the bluff in Red Wing called police Tuesday afternoon after spotting the stranded hiker on a steep incline on the bluff.

Not long after first responders arrived, they saw the man fall. Reports say police have identified the victim as 81-year-old Frank Gritters, of Pella, Iowa. Officials say he had been hiking with his wife on a dangerous portion of a trail that has been closed for two years.

The 340-foot bluff is popular with hikers because of its scenic overlook of the Mississippi River. Two others have died in falls from the bluff in the last four years.
