AVON - A group of five people, including three hitchhikers, allegedly vandalized an Avon trailhead bathroom last week.

Avon Police Chief Corey Nellis says the vandalism was reported on Friday night. Both the men's and women's bathrooms were vandalized.

Police made contact with a group of five people. The group consisted of a man and a woman from Minneapolis, who were driving three hitchhikers. They told police they wanted to drive to the west coast. The hitchhikers were three men, one from Maine, one from California and another from Tennessee.

"The three males were picked up in Minneapolis by the married couple. We were advised that the married couple was trying to get them to the West Coast," Nellis says.

The woman was arrested later in the night for DWI by the Stearns County Sheriff's Office. Rolls of toilet paper were found in the vehicle, which were believed to have been taken from the trailhead bathroom. The vehicle was towed.

Avon also recently dealt with vandalism to its Little Free Library nearby. Nellis says the two cases of vandalism are not connected. Police identified two juveniles who damaged the glass and door on the library in July.
