ST. PAUL (AP) -- Prosecutors have charged a St. Paul man accused of fatally shooting his half-brother.

Police say 32-year-old Justin Girling told a 911 operator he shot 47-year-old Kurt Schmeck in self-defense Wednesday afternoon but gave few details.

Prosecutors charged Girling Friday with second-degree intentional murder.

The siblings' mother told police she saw Schmeck trying to get on his feet after the first shot when Girling shot him twice more. Schmeck was pronounced dead by arriving medics.

Girling was scheduled to make his first court appearance Friday afternoon.
