Byron Buxton’s Loyalty Shines Amid Minnesota’s Sports Departures [OPINION]
For years, Minnesota sports fans have bemoaned the endless parade of athletes who have left their favorite team on bad terms. From Kevin Love to Chuck Knoblauch, Jimmy Butler to Griffin Jax there is seemingly a long history of Minnesota athletes that were less than loyal to our favorite teams.
The Twins are notorious for unloading players when it comes time to pay them what they have earned (and sometimes even before that point). They took that reputation to another level last month when they traded 11 players from their active roster in exchange for almost entirely minor-league prospects at the trade deadline.
One player who wasn't traded? Byron Buxton.
'TWIN FOR LIFE'
While it's easy to be frustrated for the team's recent play and front office activity, don't miss the forest for the trees: Byron Buxton is in the midst of a career year and cannot stop telling people how much he loves Minnesota and that he plans to end his career here.
"I’ve got a no-trade clause — I’m a Minnesota Twin for the rest of my life," he said on July 15. "That’s the best feeling in the world, knowing when I walk into the clubhouse every day, it’s going to say Twins. I love Minnesota — that’s home."
Instead of 'seething,' as it was reported some Twins players were upon hearing of the trade, Buxton made sure to be on the team's next road trip to meet and talk with the new players, despite not playing due to injury.
Here he is, Minnesota sports fans: a two-time All Star, Platinum Glove-winning center fielder who has just declared he NEVER wants to leave Minnesota. Let's enjoy him while we have him!
