If Central Minnesota is any indication, a bill moving through the Minnesota Legislature should have no problem sailing to a final vote.

House File 2516 (HF 2516) would amend Minnesota Statutes to require every public school district and charter school to adopt a uniform cell phone policy that substantially curtails student use of cell phones and smart watches during the school day.

Earlier this week, we asked your opinion on the use of phones and other “smart” technology by students during school hours. Over a few days, we got over 100 votes. Here are the results of our completely unscientific poll:

82% of voters believed cell phones should be banned in classrooms. Of course, most of the votes, I think, came from adults.

In the comment section of our social media pages, there were some interesting points made.

Our school has been a "no phone zone" for the last 3 years. It's been amazing!!!

Kids need their phones for emergency. Sorry to the boomers out there but we live in a very scary world and phones are our life line. We live in a different world. Times are changing get used to it or get left behind.

Andrew – St. Cloud

Computers/tablets should be banned too. My kids brags about watching videos on Netflix, YouTube etc during class. Kids use Ai and Google to complete homework. Go back to books!

Angela

The bill remains in the House Education Committee pending further discussion.
