A Minnesota man has just been given an opportunity of a lifetime.

Chris Tungseth, a man from Fergus Falls, Minnesota, just received a golden ticket on one of America's most popular programs, American Idol.

Sometimes the voices that move us the most aren’t just powerful because of the notes they hit...they’re powerful because of the stories behind them. That’s exactly the case with Fergus Falls native Chris Tungseth, who just earned a golden ticket on American Idol.

His talent as a writer, his singing ability, and his kind spirit tell a story that has viewers in Minnesota and all across the country cheering for him.

NOTHING LIKE GROWING UP IN MINNESOTA

Chris grew up in what he describes as a simple, happy, and deeply musical home. Music wasn’t just a hobby in the Tungseth household. It was clearly a way of life for them.

His father, whom Chris often calls his best friend, studied opera and became both a pastor and a worship leader. His mother was a pianist who played in church. Together, the entire family sang at holidays, services, and special events.

Chris says everything they did was together. It was the kind of childhood many people dream about. Music filled their home, their church, and their lives.

A HEARTWRENCHING TURN OF EVENTS

Then, something heartwrenching happened when Chris was just 10 years old. His mother was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. The illness changed the family’s daily life, and years later, the challenges only grew, as just a decade after his mom’s diagnosis, his father was diagnosed with leukemia.

Chris describes his dad as the foundation of their family and the strongest person he had ever known. “He was my best friend,” Chris said. As both parents battled serious illness, as you would expect, his family pulled together. Chris's siblings moved back home to help him care for his parents, and his life plans were put on hold.

THE GREATEST GIFTS

Despite the hardship, Chris says those years together became one of the greatest gifts their family ever shared. In 2023, his father passed away after a battle with leukemia. Although it was devastating, it changed the way Chris approached music.

He began writing songs as a way to process the pain, describing it as a form of journaling and healing while caring for his parents. That journey led him to the American Idol audition room. Chris, a 27-year-old construction worker and roofer from Fergus Falls, walked in with his guitar and performed an original song inspired by his father.

AUDITION RESULTS IN YES...YES...YES

The emotional performance brought the judges to tears and drew comparisons to Chris Stapleton's soulful style. By the end of the audition, all three judges said yes.

It was a moment Chris wished his dad could have seen in person.

We will all be watching closely to see what happens next for Chris Tungseth. Regardless if he wins American Idol or not, he has already won the hearts of fans everywhere.
