My wife and I were sitting around with some friends recently and the topic of the pandemic came up. We were all discussing the things that we remembered the most about that time and just how odd of a period it was.

We had to work our way through routines that at first were weird to us but quickly became the new normal, from having to wear masks everywhere and take our temperature every time we went into a building to standing six feet apart in public. To be honest, I kind of miss that one.

So, to say we’ve seen some unusual things over the last four years or so rings very true. The world of sports also brings us weird things from time to time;

The defensive player from New Orleans “wiffed” on an open field tackle that could have ended the game with a win for The Saints.

And there are many others we could dive into, but I found a couple from this past week that maybe you didn’t hear about.

First in Texas, a high school football team there is on the fourth coach in a week. That’s right 4th coach in a week. Their head coach resigned after the second game of the season.

The assistant coach took over, but that only lasted 48 hours before he stepped down.

Then the superintendent stepped in to be the Head Coach and the Athletic Director so the team could play last week. After they got smoked 54-0, the superintendent stepped down from the coaching role.

So now the school's baseball coach has been handed the reigns. Hopefully he’ll make it a full week and then they can focus on the rest of the year.

Another one I thought was weird, and maybe I shouldn’t because I just wrote about living though covid, The University of South Dakota had their game canceled/postponed last week with Portland State, after PSU had an outbreak of whooping cough.  (Why does that make me think of a scene from a Western?)

Portland State officials said that one player contracted the illness and put other members of the team and coaching staff at risk of catching it and spreading it.

This week, officials say Portland State has given antibiotics to all involved who need them but will continue to follow the situation. The team will play this week only if the players and staff meet the medical guidelines.

By the way, Portland State says last week was canceled and USD says postponed. Not having that game could hurt either team because the schools are FCS teams which still uses a 24-team playoff.

Should we be surprised when things like this happen? Probably not, but these two situations made me say “WOW” when I read about them and thought you might see the oddness too.
