ST. CLOUD - Students in the St. Cloud Area school district are going to be starting classes before Labor Day in the fall. The St. Cloud Area School Board approved the 2015-2016 school calendar during their meeting this (Thursday) evening.

Assistant Superintendent Marsha Baisch says the first day of school will be Monday, August 31st, one week before Labor Day.

The district also wanted the earlier start date because Labor Day is on Monday, September 7th, which is the latest it can possibly be.

State law says public schools cannot start before Labor Day, unless the Department of Education signs-off on it.

The 2016-2017 calendar was also tentatively set during the meeting, with the school start date for that year moved back to after Labor Day.
