Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 20, 2014 at St. Mary’s Cathedral Upper Church in St. Cloud for Robert E. “Bob” Joyce, age 80 of St. Cloud who passed away on Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at his home with his wife and friends by his side. Reverend Anthony Oelrich will officiate. Entombment will take place in Assumption Cemetery Mausoleum in St. Cloud.

Family and friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday and after 9:00 a.m. on Saturday all at the Daniel Funeral Home in St. Cloud. Parish prayers will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

Bob was born on May 13, 1934 in Chicago, Illinois, to Peter and Mildred (Wurtz) Joyce. He married Mary Rosera on August 12, 1961 in Lena, Wisconsin. Bob was an educator all of his life, teaching for 32 years at St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota. His books and articles in scholarly and popular publications develop meaning for God, being, human life, and human sexuality.

Dr. Joyce did his M.A. and Ph.D. studies at De Paul University, the University of Notre Dame, and International College. His doctoral thesis on human sexual ecology provides the philosophy for natural family planning and has been used in NFP programs, as well as University courses.

Let Us Be Born: The Inhumanity of Abortion (1970), co-authored with his wife, Mary R. Joyce, was a first book for the pro-life movement in the United States.

He was Professor Emeritus, St. John’s University, a member of the Fellowship of Catholic Scholars, the American Catholic Philosophical Association, and Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life. He was also an active member of St. Mary’s Cathedral as a lector and member of the Funeral Choir.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary; sister, Mary Konrad of Pine River; brother, James (Barbara) Joyce of Waynesville, NC; loving nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents.
