New Location for Klein Landscaping Gets Approval

ST. CLOUD -- With the redevelopment of its current property moving forward, Klein Landscaping is also moving ahead with a plan to relocate the business.

The St. Cloud Planning Commission approved a request to rezone a property two miles to the south at the corner of County Road 136 and 255th Street.

They are planning on a 17-acre commercial property with a nursery, greenhouse, and retail complex. The remainder of the property will eventually be subdivided into 10-acre single-family lots.

Larry Klein says the property currently has a farmhouse on it, which they haven't determined how they'll utilize yet.

We could use it as part of the master planning, or it could get moved or demolished.  Right now it might be used if things spur quick growth and development on 33rd Street we'll, at last, have a building to start with.

One person spoke out against the project during the public hearing. Dan Hughes owns the business Dogs for Defense just to the south on County Road 136. He says the federal government requires that their training exercises be a certain distance from residential housing.

The change to rural residential would greatly impact us.  We were excited when the property was purchased by a nursery that was our hope that it would be all a nursery and maintain that.  But any changes to rural residential could greatly impact us.

There is the potential that one future home could be developed within the minimum distance.

The planning commission approved the rezoning request with the two businesses expected to work out the issue before the project gets to the City Council for the public hearing there and final approval.
