National Mascot Day – Who Is Your Favorite Minnesota Mascot?
For whatever reason, June 17th is "National Mascot Day." With that in mind, who is your favorite Minnesota mascot?
The towering, often fur-covered creatures can be a big hit with kids... or, they can be a bit scary! For example, my seven-year-old seeks out Chisel at every St. Cloud Rox game we go to. He has Chisel's autograph on his glove, hat, jersey, a ball and even had him sign his arm at one point!
My two-year-old, on the other hand, will wearily turn the corners at Joe Faber Field while quietly muttering "I not scare of Chisel... I not scare of Chisel." (Narrator: He is 'scare' of Chisel).
Central Minnesota's high schools are blessed with spectacular mascots. The Tech Tiger, Apollo Eagle, Sauk Rapids-Rice Lightning Bolt and Freddy the Foley Falcon are all top-notch. My personal favorite is the ROCORI Spartan... what a great costume!
Our pro sports mascots are pretty great as well. Crunch has been entertaining Timberwolves fans at Target Center since 1992, TC Bear has represented the Twins since 2000, Viktor the Viking joined the Vikings in 2007 and Nordy has been the Wild's mascot since 2008.
The state's longest-running sports mascot may be Goldy the Gopher, who first roamed the Gopher football team's sidelines in 1952 (and has been spinning his head around ever since).
Here in St. Cloud, Blizzard T. Husky was introduced in the 1960's... but didn't receive the name "Blizzard" until the late 1990's.
