BEMIDJI  (AP) - Authorities are investigating after a teenage boy crashed and died following a police chase in northern Minnesota that reached speeds of more than 100 mph.

It happened early Saturday after a Beltrami County sheriff's deputy stopped a car in Bemidji. The 21-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.

The deputy noticed that the passenger, 16-year-old Morris Beaulieu of Boy River, appeared to be passed out. When the deputy and the driver were outside the car, Beaulieu slid behind the wheel and drove off.

Authorities say the boy led officers on a chase that ended when Beaulieu rolled into a ditch and struck some trees.

Beaulieu died at a Fargo, N.D., hospital.

The Minnesota State Patrol and the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office are investigating.
