WAITE PARK -- A financial boost for plans to extend the Lake Wobegon Trail into Waite Park.

The Stearns County Parks Department has announced a $250-thousand Legacy Grant from the Minnesota DNR.

The money will go toward extending the trail from St. Joseph to River's Edge Park and connect to the Harold P. Nelson Healthy Living Trail in Waite Park.

The multi-use trail will be available for bicycles, walkers, inline skaters and snowmobiles.

The Parks Department is currently negotiating with Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway to buy the property along the corridor.

So farm more than $2.3-million has been secured to build the trail.

Organizers are still seeking about $700-thousand to complete the project.
