Why Minnesota’s Generosity Ranks Fourth In The Nation
When it comes to charitable giving, few states are more generous than Minnesota.
A recent study by WalletHub sought to determine the 'Most Charitable States in the US' using metrics like volunteering, charitable giving, charities per capita and percentage of population collecting and distributing food.
Using those statistics, WalletHub found Wyoming to be the most charitable state in America, followed by Utah and Maryland.
“The most charitable states aren’t just the places where people give the largest raw amounts of money. The share of the population contributing and the percentage of their individual incomes they’re willing to use to help others are big factors in showing how charitable people are," WalletHub's Chip Lupo said.
"In addition, many people can’t afford to give much money, especially due to the influence of inflation, but they generously donate their time, which is just as important.”
HOW CHARITABLE IS MINNESOTA
Minnesota landed just outside the top three with a fourth-place finish. The Land of 10,000 Lakes finished fifth overall in the 'Volunteering and Service' category and 15th in 'Charitable Giving.'
Minnesota has the third-highest population of people who donate their time through volunteering, which boosted the state's ranking considerably.
The study also found that 'blue states' are typically more generous than 'red states,' with the blues charting an average ranking of 19.58 and the red states 29.13.
Mississippi, Nevada and New Mexico were found to be the three 'least charitable states,' per the study.
