Brainerd Photographer Captures Olympics’ Most Enduring Image
It's an image hockey fans won't soon forget.
Forward Jack Hughes of the United States men's hockey team, with an American flag wrapped around his shoulders and a big, toothless grin on his face raising his fist in celebration after scoring the game-winning goal for the US against Canada in the gold medal game.
WHO SHOT THE ICONIC JACK HUGHES PHOTO
According to this excellent article in The Athletic, the above photo was taken by longtime Getty Images photographer (or artist, in my opinion) Elsa Garrison, known professionally by her first name only.
Garrison is a Brainerd, Minnesota native who currently resides in New York City and is world renowned for her amazing ability to capture sports' biggest moments. She also has the distinction of being the first-ever female staff photographer at Getty Images.
The Athletic story notes that she first picked up a camera as a high school freshman and by her sophomore year she was shooting photos for the Brainerd Daily Dispatch.
She went to the University of Missouri after High School before being hired full time by Allsport, which was later acquired by Getty.
Since then Garrison has traveled the world covering sports' biggest events and capturing hundreds of unforgettable images along the way, like the picture above of Saquon Barkley's famous backwards-hurdle over a Jaguar defender.
