$100K Bail Set for Rochester Man Charged in Assault, Sex Assault
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Rochester man has been charged with physically and sexually assaulting a woman at her Rochester residence earlier this week.
Rochester Woman Reports Physical and Sexual Assaults
Twenty-seven-year-old Athai Lee Muon was arraigned this morning in Olmsted County court on three counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, a felony count of domestic assault by strangulation, and gross misdemeanor domestic assault. His bail was set at $100,000.
Alleged Attacks Occurred Sunday Evening
According to the charges, Rochester police officers responded to a northwest Rochester residence and spoke with a woman about an incident that occurred on October 4. The criminal complaint says the alleged victim told officers that Muon, whom she described as a former boyfriend, had come to her home unannounced, and she felt comfortable enough to allow him inside.
The court document says the woman left later in the evening to purchase a snack at a nearby gas station. When she returned, she discovered that cat litter had been dumped throughout the home and her daughter's piggy bank was shattered on the floor. She told police that Muon took her phone away from her and that she attempted to de-escalate the situation by suggesting that they watch a movie.
Woman Reported She Was Choked and Then Sexually Assaulted
The charges allege that while they were watching a movie and lying on a bed, Muon began physically assaulting her by repeatedly slapping her face and pinching her. The woman also alleged that when she pushed Muon away, he put his hand around her neck and squeezed tightly enough that she could not breathe for a short period of time.
The charges allege that Muon then sexually assaulted her while she resisted and told him "no" and "stop."
The criminal complaint also notes that the responding officers observed bruising on the woman's right elbow where she reported that Muon had gripped her during the alleged assault.
