Student With Knife Experiencing Mental Health Crisis Prompts Lockdown at Austin High School

Austin, MN (KROC-AM News)- Austin High School went into a lockdown Thursday morning.

A news release issued by the Austin Police Department says officers responded to the southeast Minnesota high school shortly after 8:30 a.m. on the report of a juvenile experiencing a mental health crisis.

Lockdown Initiated At Austin High School Due to Juvenile With Knife Experiencing Mental Health Crisis

Police say the student was armed with a knife, which prompted the school to initiate its lockdown procedure.

The news release says a School Resource Officer immediately responded to the situation and made contact with the student.

The officer was able to deescalate the situation, according to Austin police. 

Police say no force was used to bring the situation to an end. No injuries were reported during the incident. 

The juvenile was eventually transported to a Mayo Clinic facility, the news release says. 

Austin Public Schools Comment on Situation

In an announcement made to district families, Austin Public Schools Superintendent Joey Page says the student is now receiving medical care and that the school has returned to normal activities.

"The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority. We appreciate the prompt response of our staff and emergency personnel, as well as our students' cooperation during the incident," the announcement says.
