Purple Rain The Musical Is Heading To Broadway In 2027

In 1984, the movie Purple Rain reigned supreme. At that time, it grossed over $70 million and only had a budget of $7 million. That is a major win.

THE MOVIE WAS VERY SUCCESSFUL - THE SOUNDTRACK EARNED AN OSCAR

After the soundtrack won an Oscar in 1985 for Best Original Song Score, this has finally been made into a stage performance. Last year, we, as Minnesotans, got a little taste of what that would look like on a Broadway stage. It was performed at the State Theatre, and now the producers have made some little "tweaks".

Based on the 1984 film that made Prince a household name, the musical version of “Purple Rain” has been in development for years. A previous version of the show had its world premiere last fall at the State Theatre, in Prince’s hometown of Minneapolis — with the intention of a future run on the Great White Way. It received mixed reviews.

THERE WILL ALWAYS BE DIFFERENCES OF OPINION WITH A STAGE SHOW

Of course anything like this will receive mixed reviews. Not everyone will like it, or will complain that it didn't follow exactly what the film version was. Or that the performers didn't represent exactly what the film version did. Whatever it was, it was good enough to be on it's way to Broadway - specifically the Majestic Theatre in New York City.

The Broadway version is now being called "Prince's Purple Rain" and they have brought in a new creative team.

Original director Lileana Blain-Cruz and book writer Branden Jacobs-Jenkins have been replaced by Tony-nominated director Saheem Ali and Peter Duchan — best known for writing the script for the musical “Dogfight.”

Prince's music collaborators will continue to be Bobby Z and Morris Hayes.

THERE WILL BE SOME PREVIEW PERFORMANCES THIS COMING SPRING

If you want to take a hop over to New York City this coming Spring, preview performances will begin in March of 2027. Fun fact: the Majestic Theatre once had the Phantom of the Opera performances there for a very long run from1988 to 2023.
