“Free Parking” Comes To St. Paul With Monopoly Edition
ST. PAUL (WJON News) -- Fans of the board game Monopoly will soon be able to get a Minnesota version. Top Trumps, USA has announced they are working on a St. Paul Edition of one of the top-selling games of all time. Top Trumps are looking for input as to what businesses and attractions should be included in the game.
Game Manager Tim Barney says it's important for people to get their suggestions in early:
"We make selections sometimes as we go so if we find a place that we know just checks off all the right boxes and are an obvious fit for us we may go ahead and reserve a spot for them and with that said that means that the board could fill up pretty quickly, assuming we talk to the right people early on."
Barney says they typically are looking at three things when picking what will go in the game, longevity, credibility, and community engagement. He says they will pick 20 to 30 places to be included in the game and it will be hard to narrow the list down:
"I'll be honest, it surprised me we didn't get to St. Paul sooner. It's a really amazing place. We decided that it would be better to do separate editions one for St. Paul and then maybe Minneapolis down the road because there's just so much good stuff in each area that it's really hard to fit it all within one game, even within St. Paul we found that we're really spoiled for choice."
Barney has been in St. Paul with Mr. Monopoly checking out numerous attractions and says they need the public's input to help them make sure they get it right and they have to be selective to keep it special
Since its debut in 1935, Monopoly has sold over 250 million copies and has been played by more than 1 billion people worldwide. People have until the end of the month to get their suggestions submitted and the game is scheduled to hit shelves in June of next year.
