NEW MUNICH -  Fire crews were called to a barn fire near New Munich on Saturday.  The fire was reported on Highway 237 in Oak Township.

The dairy barn, which was about 40 feet by 120 feet, had flames coming out of the roof when the fire departments arrived.  There was 42 dairy cows inside the barn at the time of the fire but were safely removed by their owner.  The farm site is owned by Luverne Hinnenkamp of Melrose but the barn is being rented by Kevin Bauer of Melrose.

Due to the proximity to Interstate 94, Minnesota State Patrol Troopers was dispatched to assist with traffic control along with Stearns County Sheriff’s Office Deputies.  The Melrose Ambulance was dispatched to stand by on scene and transported one firefighter to the Melrose Hospital after that firefighter was struck in the head by falling debris. The fire departments transported water from Melrose and were on scene for over 4 hours.

The barn and dairy equipment were insured and the fire remains under investigation.
