EVELETH -  A 23-year-old Eveleth man who's accused of stabbing his younger brother twice has been arrested on tentative charges of first-degree assault.

The 20-year-old victim remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Eveleth police received a report Friday afternoon of a stabbing. They say a male caller told dispatchers he had just stabbed his brother.

The caller allegedly made threats about also having a loaded gun. Police surrounded the home, and after a 30-minute standoff persuaded the suspect to give himself up.

Police say a knife was recovered but no gun.

Investigators say they're still working to understand what started the altercation.
