What the “Flock” Is Going on in Rice Minnesota?
Every now and then something catches your eye, and you have to give a double take to what it was you thought you saw. As I was checking out the Rice Minnesota Updates and Events Facebook page, I saw what I thought was a Flamingo wearing a bra.
Yeah, not what you expect to see on community Facebook page, and I had to know more. That’s when I learned that “Flocking's” were returning to Rice.
If you’re not familiar, a “Flocking” is when someone generously places a flock of plastic flamingos in your yard. This is not an act of retaliation or vengeance, “Flocking's” are done in good spirit.
The one I saw in Rice was one of two that occurred in the last week or so. They were done to recognize and celebrate birthdays. And there was one organization that was behind the recent appearances, The Rice Women of Today.
This organization is a Non-Profit organization consisting of women and men who has the mission of giving back to their community. This group has been around since 1986, and holds the annual bike rodeo every May. They’ll give away 30 bikes and about 200 gift bags each year, thanks to the support of local businesses.
But for the funds to support the other causes they embark on, they will work meat raffles at Rumors, Shady’s and the Rice American Legion.
The Rice Women of Today has several events still on the schedule for this year and they’re using the “Flocking's” as a way to support those causes as well. The events the group has planned for this year include:
** National Night Out on August 6th
** Rice Days on August 17th
** Carnival/Haunted House Event- Dates to be determined
** Trick or Treat on Main Street on Oct. 31st
** Craft Sale on November 9th
** Santa Night on December 13th
If you have a friend or family member, you’d like to recognize with decorations that everyone will enjoy, you can email the Rice Women of Today at RWT@mnwt.org.
To have a full flock placed in a yard is $50, and a half flock is $25. You could even add a custom-made sign for another $20. And if you want the flamingos picked up for you there is an additional charge for that.
The Rice Women of Today has about 35 flamingos if you use them all. They mainly serve the Rice community but are willing to travel to different communities for a fee, that will also go to support their charitable endeavors.
This is a great idea for someone's birthday, anniversary or just because. Just remember, not only are you having a little friendly fun, but you are helping to support your local community at a time when the need for community is greater than ever.
