They didn't make it into the top two spots, but a few of the tricky words that St. Cloud area students spelled correctly in the morning portion of Central Minnesota Spelling Bee, held at St. John's Univerity -  were igneous, hominy, boudoir and cryptic.

12 of the 22 competitors in the first part of the Bee were from St. Cloud, Sauk Rapids-Rice and Sartell-St. Stephen schools. St. Cloud 6th grader Megan Brennan, and Sauk Rapids 5th grader Emma Fedor made it into the 6th round before being eliminated, placing them in the top 6 finishers.

The winners were Delano 6th Grader Seth Thoelke and the runner-up was Elise Stahl of Rockford.

The afternoon competition concluded with the top two finishers going back and forth for over 20 rounds. The winner was 7th grader Rosemary Edberg of Mora, and the runner up was Frank Brezany of Chicago Lakes.

The top two finishers in each competition will compete in the Multi-Regional Spelling Bee on March 8th in Fergus Falls.
