ST. CLOUD -- Stearns County is moving ahead with its application for grant money to install rumble strips along some county roadways despite objections from some in the biking community.

County Engineer Jodi Teich testified before county commissioners Tuesday that the grant application has already been submitted and would need to be revoked if the board wanted to further study the issue.

Commissioners approved the application on a unanimous vote.

Some members of the biking community opposed the strips along County Road 133 between Sartell and St. Joseph and County Road 2 between Cold Spring and St. Joseph.

Teich says studies show the rumble strips have increased safety for both vehicles and bicyclists. But, those who are opposed say they don't like them and question whether they actually improve safety.

The county isn't guaranteed the grant money, but if approved, will install the rumble strips in 48-foot sections along those corridors.
