WAITE PARK -- One man is in custody on multiple charges after a New Year's Day police chase in Waite Park.

Waite Park Police Chief Dave Bentrud says around 11:45 p.m. Monday, an officer attempted a traffic stop after seeing an SUV on 28th Avenue South with their brights on. The vehicle slowed for a traffic light, then went through it reaching a speed of 70 mph.

The driver of the SUV, 31-year-old Scott Schaefer-Bonovsky of St. Cloud, then started driving east on County Road 75 and Division, reaching speeds of 90 mph. Schaefer-Bonovsky hit the Hanson Flooring Building during the chase, causing minor damage.

Officers ended the chase on Veteran's Drive. After the chase ended, Schaefer-Bonovsky admitted to taking methamphetamines during it and was taken to St. Cloud Hospital.

He was later taken to Stearns County Jail, where is being held on charges of fleeing police, 4th Degree Controlled Substance DWI, driving after revocation, and a felony warrant for controlled substance.
