ST. CLOUD -- A local robotics team is on their way to Nationals after winning the 10,000 Lakes Regional competition.

This is the first time in Granite City Gearheads' four year history they qualify to go to Nationals.

There are more than 20 members from four local schools that make up the team, most of which are freshmen.

Apollo High School freshman, Donovan Magney says he likes robotics because you use your mind.

Apollo junior, Tyler Rolfes says he became interested in robotics from a friend.

Apollo freshman, Kevin Haack says he's always been interested in robotics.

The team is looking for donations to help fund their trip to St. Louis on April 23rd.

Assistant coach, Lori Dale says the trip costs an estimated $16,000 which includes a $5,000 entry fee.

If the team wins Nationals they will have a chance to go to Washington D.C. and meet President Barack Obama.
