Zumbrota, MN (KROC-AM News)-A boat belonging to the family of a fallen southeast Minnesota police officer has been reported stolen.

Over the weekend the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office shared a Facebook post about the stolen watercraft. It was said to have been taken from the family’s campsite in Wabasha County

On Monday the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office said the boat belongs to the family of fallen Zumbrota Police Officer Gary Schroeder Jr.

Boat Belonging to Family of Fallen Officer/Firefighter Gary Schroeder Jr. Stolen from Wabasha County Campground

The family says the boat was padlocked and that the thief or thieves would’ve had to cut the lock to haul it away.

The boat was covered at the time of the theft

“Please share and help this family find their boat. This boat is far more than just a boat. It holds memories of fishing with their family and their dad/husband Gary,” Dodge County Sheriff Scott Rose wrote on Facebook. 

Hwy. 58 to be Dedicated to Officer/Firefighter Schroeder Jr.

Officer Schroeder Jr. died by suicide in April 2023. He was 46 years old.

His death was classified as an in-the-line-of-duty death related to his long battle with work-related PTSD. He is survived by a wife and three children.

Earlier this year the Minnesota House and Senate passed a bill renaming a four-mile stretch of Hwy. 58 in Zumbrota the Officer/Firefighter Gary L. Schroeder Jr. Memorial Highway. 

Gov. Tim Walz signed that bill into law last week. 

Rose and the family are asking boaters to keep an eye out for the boat on the water and are asking community members to share photos of the boat.
