Cold Spring Police Warn Businesses to Lookout for Counterfeit Bills
COLD SPRING -- Businesses in Cold Spring have fallen victim to counterfeit bills in the last few weeks.
Cold Spring Police Chief Jason Blum says at least three businesses have reported getting counterfeit twenty dollar bills since the beginning of last month. He says with a few tips residents and employees can easily spot counterfeit bills.
"Some of the main things are is the color changing ink on the newer twenty dollar bills as well as the watermark, if you hold it up to the light you should be able to see the watermark in there. Twenty dollar bills also have a security thread in them. If you hold it up to the light you can see that it actually says 'USA Twenty' on that thread."
The fake bills have been found at two gas stations and one grocery store in Cold Spring. Blum says if you find a counterfeit bill you should report it right away.
"If you do find one get as much information as you can and let us know about it. If the person wants to leave don't try to stop them, just get a license plate or any other description you can give us."
Blum says the counterfeit bills have been spotted in surrounding cities as well, so even if you're out of Cold Spring still be on the lookout for fake bills.
