SARTELL -- Cold, rainy weather didn't dampen spirits in Sartell where hundreds of bicyclists and runners competed in the 31st Apple Duathlon held at Sartell Middle School.

500 athletes from 32 states participated in the event, hoping to qualify for a spot on Team USA at the World Championships to be held in Ottawa, Canada. To qualify for "Worlds," competitors must finish in the top six in each age group.

This is the second time Sartell has hosted a qualifier for Worlds -- the last dating back to 2009.

The Apple Duathlon consists of a 5K run (3.1 miles), 33K bike ride (20.5 miles), and another 5K run. Competitors may compete as individuals or pair up in a team (one member runs, the other bikes).

Sartell Middle School finished day with a Kids Apple Duathlon.
