MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The Minnesota Twins have signed shortstop Nick Gordon, the fifth overall pick in the first-year player draft.

The deal was finalized Monday, four days after the Twins took Gordon out of Olympia High School in Orlando, Florida. Gordon will start his career in Tennessee with the Elizabethton Twins, the rookie-level team in the Appalachian League that starts its season June 19.

The 6-foot-2, 170-pound Gordon is a left-handed hitter with a strong arm who batted .494 as a senior for Olympia with 17 extra-base hits, 13 steals and 27 RBIs in 99 plate appearances.

The 18-year-old Gordon is the son of Tom Gordon, a three-time All-Star pitcher who played for eight major league teams over 21 seasons.
