SAUK RAPIDS -- Adventure, song and dance take the main stage at Sauk Rapids-Rice High School tonight (Friday) as Two Rivers Community Theatre presents, "The Sound of Music."

The play is based on the 1965 movie starring Julie Andrews who plays Maria Rainer, a Austrian nun who leaves the convent to be a nanny for a decorated World War I veteran.

In the play version actress Abby Schnobrich plays the character of Maria who teaches the seven children of the widowed officer the basics of music. She sparks their interest and enters them into the Salzberg Music Festival against their father's wishes.

Schnobrich says her character ends up discovering herself,  "she finds this family and it totally turns her life around, and she decides what she wants is something completely opposite of what she thought. She makes a new life for herself."

The cast range from ages seven to 77 and performs many of the original songs from the film including, "Do-Rae-Mi", "My Favorite things" and "The Sound of Music."

Amber Christie plays The Mother Abbess. She says the main characters are looking for their purpose in life and they learn to stand up for what they believe in.
