ST. CLOUD -- Stearns County will consider whether residents will be allowed to drive golf carts on certain county roads.  It's a growing trend around the country as populations get older, and they find the carts a convenient mode of transportation.

County staff will draft a proposed ordinance for commissioners to consider in the coming weeks.

Two St. Joseph residents requested permission after the city of St. Joseph approved golf carts on city streets. The request would also allow the street-legal golf carts to travel on county roads with speed limits of 30 miles-per-hour or less.

Some of the questions yet to be answered are whether the carts could be driven at night, whether insurance is required, whether a driver's license would be required and whether the ordinance is limited to golf carts only or if it would include other vehicles like ATV's.
