ST. CLOUD - About 100 people gathered in St. Cloud on Sunday to celebrate the Norwegian Independence Day "Syttende Mai".

The holiday officially took place on May 17th and marks the anniversary of Norway's declaration of independence from Sweden in 1905.

Talleiv Vollen was a coordinator at the event, he says the event also celebrates the writing of the Norwegian constitution.  Norway adopted its constitution in 1814, 200 years ago.

Vollen adds that Norwegian culture and pride can be found all over Central Minnesota.

The event was hosted by the Sons of Norway, The largest Norwegian-American group in the world. The St. Cloud area has been celebrating the occasion for the past 42 years.
