COLD SPRING -- Plans to start construction on the new $10 million retail project along Highway 23 in Cold Spring took a step forward at their city council meeting tonight (Tuesday).

Four variances were approved for the new Wenner's Do It Best Hardware and Rental location to be built on the corner of Highway 23 and County Road 2. The variances involved the property's drainage, setbacks (the distance a building is set back from the street), and allowing a two-way drive lane behind the building, where co-owner Pat Wenner says they plan to have a carwash exit onto.

Wenner says the approval of the variances allows for more green space in the streetscape along with better and safer traffic movement.

Another set of variance requests have to go through the city planning and zoning commission in two weeks Wenner says and ideally, they hope to start construction as soon as mid-March.

Wenner says the SuperAmerica currently located on that corner will be built back into the corner of the store and Fastenal will move into a used car lot west of the building.

Do it Best Hardware is currently at 319 Main Street in Cold Spring.
