WAITE PARK -- A new outdoor fitness center moved a step closer in coming to Waite Park.

During Monday’s council meeting, the council approved applying for a grant that could build a Fitness Court along the healthy living trail along 3rd Street.

Park Board Member John Bowden says they were approached by the National Fitness Campaign about the outdoor gym and felt it would make a unique addition to the area.

“It was very appealing to us for residents to exercise in a different way, and in only seven minutes to do a full body workout."

National Fitness Campaign has worked with over 4,000 communities across the nation and hopes to install 100 courts across the country.

The court would be a 38 by 38 square-foot area with several pieces of equipment on it, allowing residents to complete a full body weight exercise program outdoors with no cost.

The fitness court equipment would cost $90,000 with additional $35,000 costs for benches, water fountains and the concrete base for a total of $125,000.

The grant approval would be for $10,000 towards the cost and the city plans to raise 60,000 through additional grants. The remaining $55,000 would come from the Park Development Fund.
