COLD SPRING - A new police dog is expected to join the Cold Spring-Richmond Police Department.

The dog, named Riley, will cost the city $9,500. The department is seeking city approval to purchase Riley with donations from the community and local police foundation.

Police Chief Chris Boucher says the dog would eventually replace their current canine, Abby. Riley is trained in finding illegal drugs and tracking lost or missing people.

Boucher adds that they found Riley for a great price in Slovakia. Performance Kennels (who the department purchased Abby through) was in the country buying canines for other departments. While doing this, it was able to find Riley who was extremely suitable for the departments needs.

The department says their current police dog Abby has been extremely valuable, being involved in over 450 narcotics calls over the last seven years.
