HUTCHINSON, Minn. (AP) - The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says a man who was shot and killed by an officer in Hutchinson had a handgun and fired at an officer before he was shot.

The BCA says authorities were called to a verbal disturbance in a duplex on Sunday. They negotiated with 49-year-old Luverne Christenson for about an hour. He eventually came to the building's front entry, but ignored officers' orders to show his hands and went back inside the vestibule.

There was a struggle. The BCA says Christenson displayed a handgun and shot Hutchinson police Officer Jacob Willers.

McLeod County Sheriff's Deputy Matt Wyatt returned fire, killing Christenson.

The 23-year-old Willers was in his third week on the job. He was shot in the leg and has been released from the hospital.
