GREAT FALLS, Mont. (AP) -- Officials at a Montana retirement home say the world's oldest man is recovering from an illness in a hospital.

The Tuesday statement from Rainbow Senior Living in Great Falls did not detail the illness or say what Walter Breuning's condition is, citing privacy concerns.

Officials with the retirement home where the 114-year-old Breuning lives did not immediately return a call for comment Tuesday evening.

Benefis Health System spokeswoman Karen Ogden says Breuning was in stable condition on Monday, but declined to say whether that had changed on Tuesday.

Breuning was born on Sept. 21, 1896, in Melrose, Minn. He worked as a clerk for the Great Northern Railway for 50 years.

Breuning is 26 days younger than Besse Cooper of Georgia, the world's oldest woman at 114.
