The city of Richmond on the Chain of Lakes is hosting a unique fishing event called Cat Fish Fest. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON this week. He says fishing for cat fish is gaining in popularity and the organizers of this 2 day event would like to make this an annual thing.

It isn't new that ice fishermen leave trash on the ice but Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News says on Red Lake in the Blackduck area a conservation officer is reporting that someone dumped their sewage from the ice house holding tank on the ice.

A new trend is becoming popular in Central Minnesota, ice camping. That according to Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News. He says people are bringing a tiny house or ice house onto the ice and spend the weekend there.

Ice conditions are pretty good in central Minnesota, but it's a different story on some northern Minnesota lakes.

The fishing locally is good. That's according to Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News. He joined me on WJON today. Schmitt says there can be a January slump but he's not seeing that right now. He says the fish are active and that includes blue gills, crappies and walleye.

Temperatures in the single digits later this week will strengthen the ice conditions locally. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON late last week. He says blue gill and crappie fishing has been great but walleye fishing hasn't been yet locally.

The windy and warm weather we saw Wednesday in the St. Cloud area wasn't helping local ice conditions thee last couple of days has improved those conditions. That according to Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News.

Last weekend was the first weekend of muzzleloader deer hunting in the state of Minnesota. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON today. He says the DNR is reporting that nearly 1,800 deer were shot this past weekend which is down about 100 deer from last year.

In parts of Minnesota the ice fishing season has already begun. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON today. He says he's heard reports of people ice fishing already in the Bemidji and Blackduck area. Schmitt says Red Lake is typically one of the early locations for ice fishing.

The Minnesota DNR is reporting more than 120,000 deer harvested during the 9-day firearms deer season this year. Those numbers are down 10.5% compared to 2020 when more than 135,200 deer were harvested.
