St. Cloud Prison Wall is the Second Longest in the World
In an episode of "did you know..." I'm sure other people have known this, but in all honesty, I just found this fact out today.
THE PRISON WALL IN ST. CLOUD IS THE 2ND LONGEST WALL IN THE WORLD
The St. Cloud prison wall which is located just off of hwy 10 as you would be heading out towards Clear Lake, is the second longest wall in the world. The first one is the Great Wall of China, obviously.
There are some interesting facts around the "great wall of St. Cloud". Yes, I just made that up.
Here are some of the facts surrounding the prison wall:
It is 22 feet tall and almost 5 feet thick, and is about a mile and a half long.
The wall was constructed over 11 years between 1905 and 1916. Because it predates modern hydraulic lifts, inmates used block-and-tackle and pure manual labor to build it. There are 10 guard towers with about 200 acres.
There is actually a quarry on the prison grounds - the oldest one in Minnesota, and the bricks for the prison were taken right from this quarry. That saved on the transporting of said bricks.
Fun Fact - no inmate has ever successfully escaped from climbing over the wall.
It is also considered as a historic landmark.
