WASHINGTON - GNP Company says they have fired the employee who is responsible for their recent chicken recall.

GNP in Cold Spring has recalled 55,608 pounds of chicken products that may be contaminated.

"The individual responsible has been identified, their employment terminated, and the case turned over to law enforcement. Because the investigation is ongoing, GNP Company is not able to provide additional details about the case."

GNP says only one of the products being recalled is being sold in grocery stores, the rest are bulk and custom items sold through foodservice and institutional outlets.

The one retail item being recalled is Just BARE Whole Chicken, sold in 4-pound bags.

The problem was discovered when GNP noticed sand and black soil were found in some of their products.

The USDA says there have been no confirmed reports of injury or illness from the products. However, if you have bought these products, you're urged not to eat them. The products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
