ST. CLOUD - The boy accused of delivering the punch that killed 20-year-old Colton Gleason made his first court appearance in Stearns County Court today (Tuesday).

Seventeen-year-old Jesse Smithers of Sauk Rapids is facing charges of murder in the second degree, manslaughter in the first degree, and assault in the first degree.

The judge ordered that Smithers remain in custody without bail.

The Stearns County Attorney also filed a motion for certification of Smithers as an adult.

Through his attorney, the 17-year-old said he had nothing to do with the attack, and doesn't know who did.

After the hearing, Gleason's father, John,  talked about the incident that killed his son.

The next court date for Smithers is a Probable Cause hearing on Tuesday, October 2nd at 2:30 p.m.

Smithers is listed as a senior on the St. Cloud Tech football roster.  Superintendent Bruce Watkins confirms he was on the team earlier this year, but was not a current member of the team.  Watkins would not elaborate any further.

Smithers is accused of getting out of a car last Thursday at about 11:20 p.m. in the 600 block between 8th and 9th Avenues South.  He then allegedly walked up to Gleason and punched him one time, causing him to fall backward and hit his head on the ground.  Gleason was taken to St. Cloud Hospital, where he died on Friday night at about 9:15 p.m.
