Taste The Season: Local Grower’s Sweet Corn Is Ready For You!
Is there anything more delicious than fresh corn on the cob? Probably, but not in late July here in Central Minnesota. I saw my first stand give notice that they would be selling their goods soon, and it appears that sweet corn season is now here!
Janson's Sweet Corn posted that they are now officially open for the season again, and I'm sure it will be a busy weekend at the corn stands.
Janson's posted yesterday on social media that they would be back open for the season and actually got off to an early start in Royalton.
2024. Here we go. Ready to start sweet corn tomorrow for all our stands. Will be the same as last year in Buckman, Royalton and Onamia. We are having an early start in Royalton today at the Dairy Queen. Can’t wait to see you!
What is it about locally grown foods that make them taste better? I guess that when it's grown locally it's not in a truck or on a plane for hours and or days at a time before it gets to the store, so we are getting those nutrients that break down during the long commutes that some produce has to take.
According to the Minnesota Corn Growers Association, "The sweet corn we find at the grocery store makes up less than 1% of corn grown nationally." WOW
So all that corn you see driving down I-94 isn't going to be smothered in butter and salt at your family picnic, instead, it's going to feed cattle or be turned into another product.
