BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. (AP) - A St. Paul science teacher has been named Minnesota's Teacher of the Year for 2013.

Megan Olivia Hall teaches grades 7-12 at the Open World Learning Community in St. Paul. She was presented with the award Sunday.

Hall had once planned on a career as a doctor, but decided to become a teacher after volunteering and teaching music at St. Joseph's Home for Children in Minneapolis. She says the experience showed her she belonged in a classroom and not a hospital.

Hall has taught at Open World Learning Community since 2006 and has been teaching in the St. Paul public schools since 2002.

The Minnesota Teacher of the Year is selected by a panel of 25 community leaders. The program is organized by Education Minnesota, the statewide teacher's union.
