Minnesota State Patrol Lieutenants Sue Over Overtime Pay

ST. PAUL (AP) — Dozens of Minnesota State Patrol lieutenants are suing the state for not paying them overtime.

The federal lawsuit contends that the Minnesota Department of Public Safety owes overtime pay to 51 lieutenants who are stationed across the state.

Attorney Gregg Corwin says State Patrol lieutenants deserve the same overtime benefits as their subordinates.

Corwin says the state won't pay overtime because it maintains the lieutenants are executives and like supervisors. But the lawsuit contends that most of the lieutenants' work is patrol duty, just like sergeants and patrol officers who receive overtime.

The amount of money involved is still being calculated.

A spokesman says the Department of Public Safety is reviewing the lawsuit but cannot comment on pending litigation.
