RAMSEY - Construction crews are working to remove a derailed train near Elk River after it left the tracks on Friday morning.

Crews used large machinery to pick up freight cars from the derailed train. The cars were taken away on large trucks.

Service on the Northstar commuter rail line was cancelled after a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train derailed and blocked the tracks at about 2:15 a.m.

Metro Transit canceled the Northstar service after about 16 empty BNSF freight cars jumped the tracks. There were no injuries.

Metro Transit said limited bus services would be offered from Elk River, Ramsey, Anoka, Coon Rapids and Fridley. But the busses couldn't carry as many passengers and trips would run longer.
