Clearwater Looks to the Future with Water Main Project

CLEARWATER -- Clearwater is a growing city, preparing for its future by building a new water main.

Clearwater currently only has one water main. It crosses the north side of Interstate-94 and comes under the freeway to the south side of the town. The city is in the process of building a new water main to not be solely dependent on the one water main in case of an emergency.

Mayor Pete Edmonson says having another water main will help the city gear up for the future.

"At this point, we're ready to keep going and plan for future growth. So it's more of a future growth strategy, and also reinsuring we have a backup plan. When you think of it, it is the responsible thing to do with the city and that's part of our job as the city council is planning for the future."

The new water main will help better serve the west side of town. Edmonson says the residential area and new businesses near Highway 24 will benefit the most from the new water main.

"These businesses, for example, Kwik Trip who is almost up and running in the next month or so, and then other businesses that are coming later, it's kind of reinsurance that if something were to happen their businesses wouldn't be affected because it's the middle of winter and something happened to the water main.

The project is going to be just over $1 million, Edmonson says the city doesn't have an exact start or finish date set yet but he expects the project to be completed sometime next year.
